About this site
Ask Better Questions is an independent publication launched in May 2026 by Steven Nelson.
The site’s title comes from Amanda Alexander, one of Steven’s law school professors, who repeatedly emphasized the importance of trying and learning to ask better questions, no matter our current knowledge level. It’s a reminder that has stuck with him in the years since. It’s a seemingly simple priority, but one that can become a significant challenge, because it can challenge yourself to try to do better on every question going forward. It can also drive you to rethink what your priorities are.
The fundamental topics to be focused on here are those that Steven has come to focus on in life and that have stayed central in mind especially the last fifteen or so years: democracy, law, organizing, and community. In practice, those touch nearly any topic, so he will try to always connect the dots to these when he writes about other topics. And so as he does, he will strive to ask better questions to focus on what is important
to build community,
to organize for political power “by the people” and “for the people,”
to understand law, the rule of law, and how it affects people; and
to understand democracy, its value, and what it requires of us to function well and to continue to exist.
He will use this site and whatever community develops around it to deepen his knowledge of these topics and his ability to communicate about them. He will strive to ask better questions to make this as useful a spot as possible for others to learn about these issues.
What he hopes to avoid is that the focus becomes about any passive political engagement. He won’t be sharing or interpreting campaign polls or taking any such horse race approach to this project. He won’t be trying to read the tea leaves to guess at the underlying motives or emotions of politicians and candidates. This is about people and their agency to live a purposeful life in which they contribute directly to their community and their governments.
